I just finished starting more seeds. But while I was there, I checked today’s high. My thermometer says 73 degrees. That’s when I realized that beyond giving me a benchmark or two, recording temperatures doesn’t really tell me much about what the weather was like.
It only has to reach 73 long enough for it to register on the thermometer, it doesn’t have to remain at that temp long enough for one to notice it. And of course there is the difference between actual temperature and perceived temperature – if it’s cloudy or windy 73 doesn’t feel as warm as when it’s sunny or still.
My point is, yesterday was lovely – but today was back to the same-old same-old. Not bad in the morning, but cold and wet by 1:30 this afternoon. But to look at the high/low temperatures, you wouldn’t know that. It would seem that today was even better than yesterday, when in fact it was just the opposite.
Looking at past temperatures, averages and other data, it is definitely colder this year than last. Only by a couple of degrees, officially, but seems like more than that as far as comfort level.
If you’ve checked my journal lately, number one, you’re probably wondering why you bother, but also, you’ve seen that NOTHING IS HAPPENING in the garden – unless you’re a weed.
At least I could do something inside today. I potted up my tomatoes -11 of them – into 4″ pots so they could grow bigger root systems. And I started all the cucurbits. I really think everything is going to go into the garden later than usual this year.
